The Victorian world was one where science made huge progress. It was a world where scarlet fever was clinically distinguished from diphtheria, where syphilis was told apart from gonorrhea and where typhoid was differentiated from typhus — but it was also a world where it was firmly believed that an honest man could be told apart from a criminal on physical grounds.

Criminal psychology was in its very infancy and forensic insights were more or less lacking. When two horrific series of murders played out in London in the late nineteenth century, the police was understandably at a complete loss to understand the mechanics behind the deeds. No originator of the gruesome murders was ever identified.

While one of the series was largely forgotten about until recent years, the other one, the so called Jack the Ripper murders, has grown to become by far the largest unsolved mystery in criminal history. More than three hundred suspects have been identified as Jack, and in the process the net has been cast ever wider and further away from the core of the events. Royals and celebrities, painters and authors as well as madmen, medicos and miscreants have been suggested for the killers role, while the oftentimes grey men factually linked to the killings have mostly been overlooked. Not least has a humble carman from the era been left inexplicably untouched upon, not only by the contemporary police but also by the many ensuing generations of case students. It is a man who fills all the requirements to fit the bill of a typical serial killer, a family man with a wife and children and a steady job – and with a huge amount of anomalies and possible lies lining the inquest testimony he gave as a witness in one of the cases.

Link by link, coincidence by coincidence and anomaly by anomaly the carman is tracked along his paths through Victorian London. In the process, the classical parlor game “Catch the Ripper” gives way to a proper case investigation. Two reputable experts in forensic medicine explain why the likely killer has now been identified and a professor of mathematics calculates the likelihood of an alternative culprit, based on the geographical factors. The similarities of the two murder series are scrutinized, a likely source of inspiration for both sets of murders is identified and a large number of misconceptions and misinterpretations are cleared away. What finally emerges is a logical picture of a single serial killer, responsible for at least around a dozen of the most haunting murders the world has ever known.

This theory, put forward by the Swedish journalist Christer Holmgren, has already been met with great interest and attention, not least in a documentary broadcasted by the British Channel 5, The Missing Evidence: Jack the Ripper. It was part of a critically acclaimed TV series that gave new, rational explanations to old and sometimes allegedly supernatural mysteries.
